Dirty Secrets (Pd 2)
“Something is amiss in our global world water supply: Striped bass are succumbing to flesh-eating bacteria in Chesapeake Bay; seabird chicks are starving in Hawai‘i; coral reefs are weakening under a growing assault of invisible contaminants and an increasing variety of aquatic animals are showing signs of developmental disorders. Experts and citizens are racing to find clues to the causes—and the solutions. Find out how we all can make a difference.”

Why We Should Care
We should care about our water supply because it has a significant impact on our population. It has such a large impact because we need water for drinking, sanitation and agriculture use for us to live. We need to take action because 1.2 billion people live in an area with an insufficient water supply. We also should care about our water quality. Farms fertilizer is causing dead zones in bays and estuaries, dead zones are when an area of water is completely depleted of oxygen. BPA can act like hormones and can effect development in young animals. BPA can come from commonly used plastics and leaches tiny amounts of chemicals in water that was found to be detrimental in lab studies. Scuba diving by near a coral reef is a one in a life time chance, but we won’t be able to do that if the coral reef is gone. If we keep burning fossil fuels this might happen because the ocean can only handle so much carbon dioxide. The ocean has absorbed so much carbon that the ph levels are dropping by .1 ph. Though this might not seem like a big drop, but a tiny change can have a large effect on many marine animals, such as the ones that make their shells from calcium carbonate like corals. Coastlines are very important to us because they provide us with many things, like food and tourist dollars. They also provide us with protection from the worst effect of storms and prevent the coastline from eroding away. Our flood plains and wetlands recycle nutrients and filter out toxins and other pollutants. To survive we need to care and keep our environment clean, that’s why we should care.
